Dear [MP’s Name],

I am writing as your constituent to ask you to take urgent action on behalf of the families of the 29 people who died in the RAF Chinook crash on the Mull of Kintyre on 2 June 1994.

Andy Burnham is the new Prime Minister. I am asking you to write to him and request that he meet the bereaved Chinook Disaster families during his first 100 days in office and establish a fresh independent, judge-led review into the crash.

This request has become even more urgent following the High Court’s decision on 14 July 2026 not to allow the families’ legal challenge against the Ministry of Defence to proceed because it was considered to have been brought too late.

That ruling did not resolve the central questions surrounding the tragedy.

The 2011 Mull of Kintyre Review overturned the finding of gross negligence against the pilots, but it did not determine the cause of the crash. Serious questions therefore remain about the airworthiness of Chinook ZD576, the decisions that allowed it to fly and whether the investigations conducted by the state were sufficiently full, effective and independent.

It is deeply troubling that, after more than three decades of incomplete investigations and institutional resistance, the passage of time is now being used to prevent the families from obtaining answers.

Many of the widows were left to raise young children alone. They were grieving while trying to rebuild their families’ lives. They were also entitled to trust that the Ministry of Defence and other public authorities would investigate the deaths of their loved ones properly.

The responsibility for the continuing absence of answers cannot fairly be placed upon those bereaved families.

During the Commons debate on the Hillsborough Law on July 14th, Andy Burnham specifically referred to the Chinook families, who were in court that day. He spoke about ending a culture of cover-up and shifting the balance of power from institutions to ordinary people.

The Chinook case now provides an immediate opportunity for the new Prime Minister and his government to demonstrate that those principles will be applied in practice.

Please ask the incoming Prime Minister to:

* meet representatives of the Chinook families in his first 100 days in office;

* commission an independent, judge-led review into the crash and its investigation;

* provide the review with full authority to compel witnesses and documents;

* require the disclosure of all relevant government and Ministry of Defence records; and

* ensure that the families are properly represented and supported throughout the process.

The families are not asking for special treatment. They are asking for the effective, independent investigation that should have taken place after 29 people lost their lives in the service of their country.

Justice delayed for 32 years must not now become justice permanently denied.

I would be grateful if you would confirm whether you will write to the Prime Minister and support this request.[Your Name]
